Physics & chemistry / DAY 22 OF 40
Your ice cube has exotic relatives.
Water can arrange itself into many different crystal structures.
Here's the strange part.
The ice in your drink has a surprisingly complicated extended family. Pressure, temperature and atomic ordering let water form different crystal structures. Researchers used neutron diffraction to work out ice XIX, a high-pressure form with a particular arrangement of hydrogen atoms. Same water molecules, different organisation. Your freezer is not secretly running the whole collection. (University of Innsbruck)
Ice XIX is a specialised high-pressure form, not the ice in a household freezer. This article does not present an old phase count as today's final total.
REALITY CHECK · TRUE OR FALSE?
Your ice cube's family reunion got complicated.
Ice XIX is the ordinary ice made in a household freezer.
