Science history / DAY 23 OF 40

The scientist who swallowed his hypothesis.

Barry Marshall's self-experiment helped challenge ideas about stomach disease.

Here's the strange part.

Barry Marshall gave “testing your own idea” a dangerous literal meaning when he swallowed a culture of Helicobacter pylori in 1984. He developed gastritis, and the bacterium was later cultured from biopsies. The episode helped challenge established thinking about stomach disease, but this single experiment did not produce a demonstrated ulcer. It belongs in history, not on a list of things to try. (The Nobel Prize)

KEEP IT HONEST

He developed gastritis, not a demonstrated ulcer in this experiment. This dangerous historical episode is not something to imitate.

REALITY CHECK · TRUE OR FALSE?

History check, not a challenge.

Marshall's self-experiment demonstrated an ulcer, rather than gastritis.
