Your body / DAY 21 OF 40

Your skeleton came with extra pieces.

Many of the bones you had as a baby fused as you grew.

Here's the strange part.

Your skeleton started with more pieces than it ended up with. Newborns typically have around 275 to 300 bones, while most adults have 206. Many pieces fuse as the body grows, rather than mysteriously going missing. Individual counts and fusion timing vary, so “you lost a hundred bones” is a punchy line, not a precise inventory. KEEP IT HONEST

Newborn and adult bone counts vary. About 275–300 at birth and 206 in most adults are useful reference figures, not promises.

REALITY CHECK · TRUE OR FALSE?

Skeleton assembly: where did the spare parts go?

Growing up involves many smaller bones fusing together.
