Your body / DAY 33 OF 40

A trillion smells? Let's inspect that number.

One famous estimate became a lesson in how science checks itself.

Here's the strange part.

A trillion smells is a headline with excellent advertising instincts. A 2014 study estimated that scale by extrapolating from people's ability to distinguish odour mixtures. Later critiques challenged the mathematics and assumptions behind the leap. That does not hand us a neat replacement number. It shows why the bridge from an experiment to an enormous claim deserves inspection. (California Institute of Technology)

KEEP IT HONEST

The total number of odours humans can distinguish remains undetermined by this evidence. Discrimination is also different from identifying or naming a smell.

REALITY CHECK · TRUE OR FALSE?

A trillion? Let's ask the calculator.

The critique establishes a precise replacement total for distinguishable smells.
