Living things / DAY 38 OF 40

A 24,000-year pause. Then life continued.

A rotifer recovered from permafrost revived and reproduced.

Here's the strange part.

This rotifer's pause lasted longer than recorded human history. Recovered from Siberian permafrost, the tiny animal revived after thawing and reproduced. Radiocarbon dating placed its age at roughly 24,000 years. That is an extraordinary recovery, not evidence that anything frozen can wait forever. Researchers still wanted to understand how the animal endured it. (BBC News)

KEEP IT HONEST

The age estimate has a range, and one successful recovery does not establish indefinite survival.

REALITY CHECK · TRUE OR FALSE?

The world's most patient pause button?

One revival after roughly 24,000 years proves indefinite frozen survival.
