Earth & nature / DAY 12 OF 40

The glacier with a red outflow.

Blood Falls is a story about hidden brine, not a bleeding glacier.

Here's the strange part.

Blood Falls has a name that does not leave much work for the imagination. Behind the red outflow is a brine system associated with Antarctica's Taylor Glacier. Radar work traced a route connecting a brine source to the falls through the glacier. That is a look into hidden plumbing, not proof of every dramatic age claim attached to the water. (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research)

KEEP IT HONEST

The radar work traces a brine pathway. It does not by itself establish that the water was sealed away for more than a million years.

REALITY CHECK · TRUE OR FALSE?

The glacier's plumbing report has limits.

Mapping the brine pathway alone proves the water was sealed for a million years.
