Diamond rain. No umbrella required.
Lab-made nanodiamonds point to a very strange kind of planetary weather.
Here's the strange part.
Neptune has not sent us a weather report full of diamonds. The intriguing part happened in a lab: laser-driven shock waves squeezed carbon-rich material until nanodiamonds formed. That gives scientists evidence for a process that could happen deep inside ice giants. The experiment is real; the planetary diamond shower is the inference. Your jewellery budget can relax. (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory)
Diamond formation was observed in a laboratory. Diamond rain inside Neptune and Uranus remains an inference, not a photograph from inside a planet.
